Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, a delightful story for the young and maybe even more so for the golden, is a famous character created by David McKee. Elmer is now published in more than 20 languages. Elmer is anelephant who has a very colourful body resembling a multi-coloured patchwork. His personality is optimistic and lively and he enjoys telling jokes.
Elmer is sad because he feels different from the other elephants and decides to ‘change’ so as to ‘blend in’ with the group. However, the others do not recognise him anymore.
It is then, when his friends reject him, that he realises what mistake he’s made. Fortunately, it soon starts to rain and the grey paint that Elmer has covered himself with disappears. As Elmer’s ‘true colours’ are revealed again his friends feel overjoyed and organise a party to greet him. Knowing that his friends love him for who he is makes Elmer very happy.
Elmer’s unique personality and looks were indeed what everybody loved about him! Contrary to what he thought, his being ‘different’ was exactly what made him even more special to others.
