As you know June is on its way and this is the time for summer internships and pupillages!

An interview is that one step closer to your chances of securing one and how you perform on the day can make or break the deal.

Here are 5 interview tips you can’t leave home without!

1. Always come prepared
The law firm was impressed with how you look on paper so they like you.

They want to know if you’ve done your research about the firm and how you come across as a person.

Read about the firm; look into their areas of specialism; family law, commercial law; intellectual property law and how it ties into the real world. Read about the clients they’ve dealt with in the news court documents, financial and legal journals.

This shows you are well informed about the role and their establishment.

1. Pay attention to details

Listen carefully to the interviewer and the questions they are asking you.

If they ask you about a time you’ve dealt with a situation under pressure; use a legally relevant answer.

For example previous work experience where you dealt with an important matter in a relatively short time or if you haven’t got one linked to work use an academic example dealing with assignments and essays with approaching deadlines.

This shows the firm you can deal with a demanding professional environment

1.Dress Smartly
IMAGE IS EVERYTHING!

For men, wear a suit with a tie, a clean shaven face and polished smart shoes.

For females, a suit or shift dress with tights, hair tied back and subtle make-up.

If the firm can make a good visual impression of you; you have greater chances of securing a place.

1. Build on your strengths
An interview is the opportunity to portray YOU in the best light

If you are asked questions that bring up a negative; turn it into a positive! If you are a shy person, use examples such as law society activities, social and networking events that show that you have built on your interpersonal and communication skills.

1.Think out of the box

The individual who is interviewing you will usually be a partner or associate and works in the legal establishment. He or she will also look out for signs that you can fit into the organizational culture and try to get you relaxed. After all you should be able to get a good laugh in with your colleagues!

So expect an extremely unusual question!

If they ask you what’s your favourite animal?

Pick an animal that displays the same traits as you and will leave a lasting impression.

And remember don’t be late! Plan your journey in advance and leave in good time!
